Warts: What Does HPV Look Like, How Is It Transmitted
Warts are probably more common than most people think, occuring on all parts of the body but usually only outwardly noticeable when appearing on the face, hands or neck.

They form a lump like appearance, singly or in small clusters called crops and can be caused by a slight overgrowth of skin cells in a small localised or defined area, causing the skin to be rather rough. The cause of wart growth is a virus of the human papillomavirus family, or hpv for short which exists in most people as a dormant virus, normally adequately controlled by the body’s very efficient immune system. Some people seem to be naturally resistant to the virus whereas in others outbreaks can occasionally occur and maybe more than once. It is believed by some to be hereditary.
The underlying hp virus which has more than a hundred different strains, may result in wart growth in various parts of the body and depending on where they appear these outgrowths are given different names. So, for example, warts on the hands (common or seed wards) have a different name from warts on the mouth (oral warts) or the feet (plantar warts, related to the verruca). But even though they have different names the treatment can still be the same because ultimately it is the same virus causing them.
There are many different treatments available for gettting rid of warts including wart freeze or freezing, using acids to burn the wart and drawing the wart out from the root. Some of these can be quite painful and leave scars. There are also other alternative, less painful treatments available which take a more natural approach and claim to be successful in healing warts with the use of certain specially prepared oils or creams. However, since the virus itself doesn’t go away there is always a chance of warts reappearing again.
Warts on the hands, from a low risk virus strain, are not usually dangerous, are non-cancerous and not usually passed on to others unless you pick or scratch them but other warts, such as genital warts, officially called condyloma, are contagious and carry the danger of cancer so they should be taken seriously.
Genital warts are one of the most common of the sexually transmitted diseases. You may notice some itching or burning in the area or notice some bleeding during intercourse. They often appear as small swollen bumps that can clump together to look a little like a cauliflower but can also sometimes be present without any obvious symptoms and so can escape detection except to a trained eye or by having a regular check up at the clinic.
They can occur in both men and women. These warts are different from herpes with which they are sometimes confused. Vaginal warts can upset the regular functions of the female cycle causing irregular or painful periods and vaginal infections and represent some danger in pregnancy and to the unborn baby so it is important to check it out if pregnancy is suspected.
